Emma Coffey,
2006 NZ Rose of Tralee
"What does it take to be a Rose of Tralee? I realise
there is no typical outline to a Rose. It is purely about
being confident with who you are, taking the chance to
celebrate your culture and the opportunity to be an ambassador
for your city or country.
"Becoming a Rose on the other hand is a wonderful unique
experience. For me it was the chance to be a positive
role model for young Irish women. A chance to learn more
about my Irish heritage as well as creating a positive
impression of the Hutt Valley and New Zealand internationally.
"When I look back on my time in the festival I am overwhelmed
with wonderful memories. From meeting the most amazing
29 women who's encouragement for each other was so strong
and positive, to our unforgettable journey to Cork and
around the beautiful coastline towards Killarney where
the madness of Tralee was about to begin.
"Nothing prepared me for the magic of the festival in
Tralee - the glittering nights, street parades, parties
and of course the live RTE television interview. But above
all else the most memorable part of this festival was
the welcoming and support shown to us by the people of
Kerry, Ireland and the families of each contestant.
"Every step of my journey has been a magical experience
and one that has made an everlasting imprint on my life.
I would like to thank the Hutt Valley Irish Society for
their on going support, Rodney Walshe and the Consulate
Generals office, Emotif Photography and to my friends
and family to whom I am forever grateful for their fundraising
efforts and continued support during my year as the New
Zealand Rose."
